Choosing the Right Way

Prek 3 Village is a rural village located in Somroang Commune, Phnom Krovanh District which is 38 kilometers away at the northern part of Pursat. Mao Sophea is now 30 years old in 2013. Her marriage with her husband who is one year older than her and lives in the same village took place in 2003. After living with each other for more than 10 years, the couple now has 4 children which is the gift for their lasting marriage.

Thanks to the education and dissemination of Partners in Compassion’s staff within her village about modern contraception, including condom, oral contraceptive pill, Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA /Shot), nor plant/implant and intrauterine device (IUD). Sophea is aware and believe in the benefits of contraception, but she was hesitated to discuss it with her husband. The staff came to discuss and explain her about the reasons for accessing contraception service and she also told that she currently already has many children and her health is not in a good condition due to her heart disease causing her to pant and she has a hard time trying to make a living, leaving her no time to take care of her children and earn money. With apparent reasons and her hardship in life, the staff encourages her to discuss it with her husband. After that, she decided to take it to discussion and told her husband that “I no longer want any children, because we already have many children and my health is not in good condition and we also have a poor living condition. Additionally, when our children grow up, we will not be capable enough to afford a proper education for them.” After discussing with sufficient reasons, her husband agreed with her request and she was very pleased and excited and chose the long-term contraception by using intrauterine device (IUD).

Partners in Compassion’s staff prepared the referral form and explained about the available service in the area which is health centers and sun clinics and told her about the price of the service. On 20th February 2013 she accessed the service in Samroang Health Center. “After accessing the service, my health condition is fine with no side effect and I am very satisfied, because I have enough time to take care of my children and hope that in the future my family and I will not live under this poor thatched cottage like today. Thank you very much for showing me the good and right way.” said Sophea gratefully.
