Anthills like this are common in Cambodia and can grow to be quite large. The Ants seem to enjoy decorating the countryside with their creative mounds of clay, prepared, as only they know how, to withstand the forces of Nature. Because of this preparation, the clay makes a great source of molding material for our artist. |
|
Here are two of their most recent creations. The clay will not last a long time but it is cheap and easy to get for the time being. Once they get better at sculpturing we will try to find better quality material and Mr. Houet, our Art Instructor, has said he will start them in wood sculpturing soon. Works like this, are creating a great sense of accomplishment in those who do them but they also have had a positive influence on other children in and around our community who observe. A new beginner's art class has just started and already some of the participants are showing great promise. Mr. Houet hopes that one day we will be able to turn Wat Opot into a park-like museum of great Art and Sculpture for people to enjoy... we have the artist and so it looks like the only thing standing in our way, is the funds to do it. |

We were also Blessed to have Fiona and Marijke, from New Zealand, here during the month of July. They were able to teach our children about jewelry making and sewing for profit. Several of the children, under the supervision of our Youth Worker Ms. Srey Aun, have taken up the challenge and have already produced and sold over $500.00 worth of merchandise. |

We are working on quality right now but if we are able to continue... it could bring in the extra funds needed to run this place. Like almost every other program, we have really felt the effect of the downturn of the World's Economy and have had to use this money just to keep food on the table... but the children are delighted that they can help out. |

This tray of painted Bamboo pieces will eventually end up as bracelets, like the one pictured below. These have been one of the most requested pieces so far. It is not easy work and each finished piece requires several people to bring it to completion. |
|
Big-bead-braided bracelets are also popular and while they are easier to make, finding and keeping a supply of these big beads is difficult... but we are working on it.

We are so very grateful to all who have helped us to reach this stage in our development. Despite the slowdown in funds we are learning to work together for the benefit of our community... and that is not a bad thing.
